Labor Day Weekend

We had a nice relaxing and productive Labor Day weekend.  Friday Garrett woke up not feeling well.  He stayed home from school and then spent the whole weekend sick.  There is a really bad cold going around and also covid.  I am pretty sure he caught one of the two because he stayed in bed all weekend.  We checked a few projects off our to-do list around the house.  I bought a new patio table off Facebook Marketplace that needed to be re-painted.  I got some spray paint and worked on that.  It looks so nice, we are looking forward to enjoying that area on the patio.  We hung some shelves in the loft closet as well as in the garage.  Nolan helped mow the backyard.  The boys enjoyed watching some football with friends.  We bought a little tabletop firepit from Aldi and enjoyed sitting on our deck enjoying that.  We went down to the sunflower fields in Weldon Springs for a Sunday evening walk.  Nolan really wanted to go play putt-putt golf.  Monday, we took him over to play.  He loves playing putt-putt.  He had a few hole in ones.  We went to the pool for a little while, but the water was really cold.  The boys braved the cold water, and I enjoyed reading my book. We missed having Lucy around and we were sad Garrett wasn't feeling well to join in any of the fun.

The week after moving to Utah Lucy kept busy and had lots of fun with visitors and various activities.  JJ's mom planned a fun evening with Lucy and her cousin Lola.  They went to dinner up the canyon and then to a theater to watch the play "footloose".  Lucy also got to spend some time with Grandpa and Courtney one day.  They came down and brought the things that he drove out.  They also went to lunch and went to the store.  Lucy had a few things that she had found she needed or we forgot to get. She went to lunch with the Palmers before the BYU football game Saturday.  Lucy had a blast at her first BYU football game.  She even got to say hi to Amy who was out there visiting with Avery.  We were happy to see her having fun and I know seeing some familiar faces helped her transition and not feel too homesick.

Taking Lucy to Utah

We went back and forth for a while trying to decide the best way to help Lucy move to Utah.  We didn't have a lot of time to take away from work and it was tricky with the boys starting school that week.  Driving would have taken too much time, so we decided to fly.  We had someone from our ward driving out for education week and my dad was driving out as well.  Both were willing to take somethings out for Lucy.  That made is possible for her to fill her suitcases full and take what she could.  We could always buy things out there and she will be home for Christmas to get anything else she needed. I started feeling sick on Wednesday and was questioning if I should make the trip.  Lucy said there was no option, I was coming.  I drugged myself up and off we went on Thursday afternoon.  We coordinated a lot of help with Nolan while we were gone.  He had rides to football that evening and Garrett would pick him up. Our flight got in late Thursday evening/early Friday morning.  We were all exhausted and I think getting a little more sleep for me would have been helpful.  We got up Friday morning and started running errands.  First to Target for cold medicine so I could make it through the day.  We then picked up Lucys apartment key and then headed to campus to get her student ID.  We decided to walk around campus a little bit since we were there.  We walked around and found where Lucy has classes there.  They were easy to find.  We then got some lunch and headed to her apartment.  We were excited to see where she would be living.  It is an older apartment and pretty small.  I was trying to gauge Lucy on what she thought of it.  I asked her later if she liked it and if it met her expectations.  She said she didn't really have any expectations.  She picked it and it was in the location she wanted and in the price range she wanted to spend.  It was nice to see the apartment and see what we needed to get to help it feel like home for Lucy.  We meet up with the couple from our ward who brought out a few of Lucys things.  They dropped the stuff by.  It was so nice of them to help us out. We spent a lot of the day shopping and running errands.  We made a trip to Ikea for somethings and then got dinner and stopped by to see JJ's parents.  We were staying in a hotel in Provo since I wasn't feeling well.  It ended up being the best choice since we were close to Lucy's apartment.  We went to Target to use some of Lucy's gift cards.  It was so helpful to have those and were able to get several things there at Target.  They were also having a discount for college kids. We had a very busy day and were ready for bed that night.  Saturday, we got up and started the day by riding the bus and the frontrunner.  That was a big thing we wanted to do with Lucy.  She doesn't have a car there and she will be riding the bus a lot.  We wanted to make sure she felt comfortable with that and especially riding the frontrunner to Salt Lake for her classes.  It was fun and easy to ride the frontrunner.  We rode it up to Salt Lake and then walked to the building just two blocks from the station.  Both of her classes are there and it's easy to find.  We are glad she doesn't have much walking to get to where she needs to go.  We got off the frontrunner on our way home at Lehi and meet up with Courtney and Jesse.  It was a last-minute thing, but I was thankful for them being flexible and meeting up with us briefly while we were in town.  They picked us up at the station and we went somewhere quick to have some lunch.  That afternoon we ran more errands.  We went to Sams club and Walmart and got the last of what we needed to get as well as some groceries.  We also went back to Target.  We helped get Lucy's bedroom put together.  We assembled the Ikea pieces we got, and everything was starting to really look good.  Lucy was still going to have somethings to work on after we left.  We decided to get a little Caesars pizza for dinner.  There is one on the corner of her street.  We wanted to ride the bus a little more with her, so we ate our pizza while waiting at the bus stop.  After riding the bus, we decided to catch a little bit of the women's soccer game going on.  It was a fun game and BYU won.  We were exhausted again at the end of our day.  We accomplished a lot over the past two days.  We slept so well that night.  Sunday we were heading home.  It was raining and we had planned on a walk but ended up just driving up the canyon to look at Bridal Veil falls and then back to drop Lucy off at her apartment.  It really hit us that morning that we were leaving, and Lucy was staying.  It is a strange thing to have kids grow up.  I remember back to my parents saying similar things and not really understanding.  Even other families who have had kids leave for college.  I never have understood until now.  Going through this and leaving a child in another place is hard.  We went into Lucy's apartment, and her roommates were there getting ready for church.  It was nice to be able to meet them and most of their families as they moved in that weekend too.  Once we were all set, we knew we needed to leave so we could head to the airport.  We said our goodbyes, which was harder than I thought.  I don't usually cry but I cried saying goodbye to her.  I am so happy for her and so excited for this experience, but it is sad to leave her so far away.  We know she will do great and have so much fun.  This is what we want for her!  I saw a quote online that I love and keep telling myself, "The healthy bird leaves the nest."  I am thankful Lucy wanted this adventure and has big goals for herself and her future.  I know she will do amazing and do great things, I can't wait to see. A big part of our hearts and our family now lives in Utah.  We will miss her at home and things won't be the same.

First Day of School

I was not ready for summer to end this year.  I really do love summer.  I love how things are laid back and we can enjoy longer days with sunlight.  I get sad thinking about fall and the sun setting earlier and it being dark by dinner time.  I really loved going to some classes at the gym over the summer with a friend.  Nolan and I spent lots of afternoons hanging out at the pool with friends.  I really enjoyed meeting up with my friend Tracy at the pool.  We would have a fun time chatting and swimming together.  I am starting to realize I like the version of myself in the summer.  I think because of this I put off really getting ready for summer this year.  We didn't do a big back to school shopping trip. When I took Nolan to walk the halls at the school I didn't even think I should already have supplies to be dropping off.  I did eventually get into gear and did shop for new outfits and supplies.  Garrett started off his day with early morning football practice.  He hurried home and took a shower after practice.  JJ and I walked Nolan over to his bus stop.  Middle school bus comes early!  His bus comes at 6:50 AM and he has to walk to the next street over. It is going to be an adjustment for him.  I went back to work at the elementary school.  This will be my fourth year working in the kitchen there.  I am happy to be back and when we all returned, we all commented that it felt like we never left.  After school I was happy to hear Nolan had a really good day.  He really likes his teachers and has friends in his classes.  I hope this is a really good year for him.  I don't feel like we ended elementary school on a very good note.  I hope that he can enjoy learning again.  Garrett gave me a simple report that everything was fine.  He feels like he never left either, just starting a new semester.  I hope he has a good year too.  He has some good classes that will challenge him and hopefully will get him ready to apply for colleges next summer. We were all exhausted after our first days and ready for bed early.

Washington Jamboree

Nolans football team played in the Washington Jamboree.  It was an early start to our day, but we were thankful to be there early in morning.  We were in a heat advisory, so we were glad to be there before it got to hot.  Lucy came with us since she would miss Nolans football games during the season.  Nolan played in three short games.  They did a lot of rotating and playing for practice.  It was good for the boys to be back on the field.  Nolan got to even play on offense and scored a touchdown during the last game.  He usually only plays defense, so it was fun to see him play offense.  On our way home we stopped at sonic for some slushie drinks.  They were so good and hit the spot after being in the heat.  We went home and headed to the pool to cool off after lunch.  That evening Lucy and Garrett had a youth boating activity.  We have a family in our ward who lives on the lake and invited everyone over.  The kids had a fun time boating around and being with their friends.  The kids don't usually go to activities, so it was fun to have a big activity planned that they were excited to attend.

We wanted to have family over to celebrate Lucy and to see everyone before she leaves for college.  We decided to have sweet pulled pork, Cafe Rio style dinner.  It was all so yummy, it has been a while since we have made that.  It has also been a long time since we have all been together.  It was nice to see everyone and catch up on what is new. Jordan and Jennys kids are so fun and sweet.  It was fun to see their little personalities.  Christy and Joes little Lainey is getting so big too.  She is at such a fun age.  All the kids enjoyed playing with toys and running around.  It makes me happy to see things played with and have the house full of fun laughter and play.  It was a nice evening, and I know Lucy especially liked getting together to celebrate.  It will be hard to have her so far away and I know she will miss the family.
