A little over a year ago Lucy was tripped by a referee during a basketball game. She rolled her ankle and injured it when it happened. She was able to tape it and keep playing the rest of her season. It never really felt better, and she continued to tape it during track. Over the summer while she was attending BYU basketball camp it started to really hurt her. It was to the point she could barely walk. I took her in, and we found out she had a large cyst in her ankle. We had it drained but it filled back up pretty quickly. We had it drained again before basketball season, and they also did a steroid shot. He explained that there were several pockets with the cyst, and they wrapped around important veins and tendons in her foot. It if continued to bother her we would need to consider having it surgically removed. She made it through basketball season but towards the end it started to hurt her again. We made plans to have it taken out. We meet with the surgeon and after doing a new MRI we saw the cyst was just as big as it was before ever draining it. He agreed and felt that since there was no relief with draining it doing surgery was the best option. We made plans to have it done and although Lucy is not excited about the recovery we hope this is the end of this cyst. I took Lucy to the surgery center and everything went really smooth. Surgery took a few hours, but he was able to remove a lot of it and the pockets he couldn't remove he made sure to pop them and drain them. He told me he worked a long time on her food and really dug around making sure to get everything. We got home just as the other kids were getting home from school. Lucy was feeling pretty well but getting around on crutches is a new thing at our house. I was thankful to find a good pair of crutches at goodwill and not have to spend a lot. I took off work on Friday as well so I could be with her. We hung out and watched TV while managing pain, keeping her foot elevated and iced. Hopefully recovery will go well for her, and she will be walking like normal just in time for graduation. I am glad we were able to get this done before summertime and in between all the things she has going on. It will be hard to not have an extra driver. It's her right foot so no driving for her for a while. In the end I hope all of this is worth it and this injury will be behind us.
